Vishwakarma Jayanti

Vishwakarma Jayanti

Vishwakarma is known as the God of Architecture. The festival of Vishwakarma Jayanti is celebrated in his memory as he is a divine architect. This festival usually falls in the month of February. People of industries, artists, weavers and others also celebrate this festival with great enthusiasm and fervor. In all industries and workplaces people observe holiday to celebrate this festival. Pooja is conducted at the workplace and Prasadam is distributed.

Vishwakarma taught the science of craftsmanship and explained various arts to others. This tradition is still going on as the learned persons teach the art and science of certain creations to deserving persons. People on this day clean their tools and also repair their machines. Statue of Lord Vishwakarma is placed in the compound of industries.

On this day the industrialists make a resolution to increase the production and also make changes in their way of working. Puranas say that Lord Vishwakarma created this universe. He created the city Dwarka also when Bhagwan Krishna shifted to Dwarka. According to mythology the idols of Bhagwan Jagganath is also prepared by Lord Vishwakarma to fulfill the request of a king. When he was carving the statue he put a condition that no one should open the door of the room as he himself will come out when the work will be completed. Many days passed but Vishwakarma didn’t come out from the room. Then king pushed the door and saw that idol is incomplete. The king couldn’t saw the Vishwakarma at that place. Since then the Idol of Lord Jagannath is worshipped in the same form.

II Vishwakarma ji Ki Aarti II

Lord Vishwakarma is believed to be the architect and the master of all machinery equipments of gods. Son of Brahma, he is the divine draftsman of the whole universe, and the official builder of all the gods' palaces. Lord Vishwakarma Aarti

Lord VISHWAKARMA was the only architect who was imbued with all the qualities of Fine Art, which were necessary for the creation of Universe. It is a fact that is recognized by all that legendary Golden Lanka (Sri Lanka) was built by Lord VISHWAKARMA.

Lord VISHWAKARMA with multihand is accepted by every Indian as the creator of Universe. Lord VISHWAKARMA is described as the God of carpenters, goldsmiths, blacksmiths, masons and all those people who are skilled in the crafts. Lord VISHWAKARMA is as great as Lord BRAHMA, VISHNU, MAHESH because all our scriptures concerned with Hindu religion contains episodes of his glorious contributions

Everything in this world we see like big dams, the reservoirs, bridges, skyscrapers, airplanes and all sorts of mechanics around which our life revolves are the product of Hammer and Chisel, which represent. Lord VISHWAKARMA. Mankind cannot deny these facts as it would be a betrayal of our mythological history.

Vishwakarma Pooja

Vishwakarma Pooja & Govardhan Pooja

The fourth day of Diwali, ie the day after Diwali, falls on Padyami, the first day of the lunar New Year, and is called Vishvakarma Day/ Gudi Padwa/Govardhan Puja. This year Vishwakarma Pooja is on 29th October.

Vishwakarma Pooja: The day is celebrated to worship Vishwakarma. Vishvakarma was the divine architect, and one of the fourteen precious things born of the Samudra Manthan (the churning of the ocen to gain Amrita, the nectar of immortality). He constructed the holy city of Dwarka where Lord Krishna ruled, The Maya Sabha of the Pandavas and was the creator of many fabulous weapons for the gods. This day is often used by manufacturers to pray for their equipment so that it works well and makes profit during the year ahead.

Govardhana Puja. Govardhan is a small hillock in Braj, near Mathura and on this day of Diwali people of North India build cow dung, hillocks, decorate them with flowers and then worship them. This festival is in commemoration of the lifting of Mount Govardhan by Krishna. As per Vishnu-Puran the people of Gokul used to celebrate a festival in honor of Lord Indra and worshiped him after the end of every monsoon season but one particular year the young Krishna stopped them from offering prayers to Lord Indra and asked them to worship cattle instead. Indra in terrific anger sent a deluge to submerge Gokul. People were afraid that the downpour was a result of their neglect of Indra. But Krishna assured them that no harm would befall them. He lifted Mount Govardhan with his little finger and sheltered men and beasts from the rain. This gave him the name Govardhandhari.

It is also on this day that the King Bali would come out of Pathal Loka and rule the earth for one day as per the boon given by Lord Vishnu. Hence, it is also known as "Bali Padyami".

This day also marks the coronation of King Vikramaditya and Vikarama-Samvat - the counting of the Vikram era, was started from this Padwa day.

Gudi Padwa is symbolic of love and devotion between the wife and husband. On this day newly-married daughters with their husbands are invited for special meals and given presents. In olden days brothers went to fetch their sisters from their in-laws
home for this important day.

Vishvakarma Or Vishwabrahmin is the Hindu presiding deity of all craftsmen and architects. TS 4.3.2), as per Vasishtha Purana 3.6.11 Vishwakarma created 5 Brahmas from each of his 5 face, they are 1. Sanaga Brahma Rishi, 2. Sanaathana Brahma Rishi, 3. Abhuvanasa Brahma Rishi, 4. Prathnasa Brahma Rishi, 5. Suparnasa Brahma Rishi, in later mythology sometimes identified with Tvastr[2], he is the divine craftsman of the whole Universe (RV 10.81.3), and the builder of all the gods' palaces. Vishwakarma is also the designer of all the flying chariots of the gods, and all their weapons and divine attributes. He is said to have revealed the Sthapatyaveda or fourth Upa-veda, and presides over the sixty-four mechanical arts.

In the Vedic mythology,He is described as Virad purusha from whose navel the later puranic concept of padmanabha the divine smith Twosta originated. dwiteeya anuvaka of yajurveda purusha sootktha. however, the office of "Indian Vulcan" is assigned to Tvastr as a distinct deity, Vishva-karman being rather identified with Prajapati himself as the creator of all things and architect of the Universe; in the hymns RV 10.81 and 10.82 he is represented as the universal Father and Generator, the one all-seeing God, who has on every side eyes, faces, arms, and feet; in the Brahmanas he is called a son of Bhuvana, and Vishva-karman Bhauvana is described as the author of the two hymns mentioned above.

In the Mahabharata and Harivamsa, he is a son of the Vasu Prabhasa and Yoga-siddha. The Mahabharata describes him as "The Lord of the Arts, Executor of a thousand Handicrafts, the Carpenter of the Gods, the most eminent of Artisans, the Fashioner of all ornaments ... and a great and immortal God..." He has four hands, wears a crown, loads of gold jewellery, and holds a water-pot, a book, a noose, and craftsman's tools in his hands.

In the Puranas a son of Vastu, and the father of Barhishmatî and Samjna; according to other authorities he is the husband of Ghrtaci. The Ramayana represents him as having built the island of Lanka for the Rakshasas, and as having generated the ape Nala, who made Rama's bridge from the continent to the island; the name Vishva-karman, meaning, doing all acts", appears to be sometimes applicable as an epithet to any great divinity.

Vishwakarma Puja (the Festival Day of Vishwakarma) is celebrated on the 17th of September. The festival is observed primarily in factories and industrial areas, often on the shop floor.

Vishwakarma is known as the divine engineer since the Puranic age. As a mark of reverence he is not only worshipped by the engineering and architectural community but also by all professionals. It is customary for craftsmen to worship their tools in His name.

Vishwakarma Puja is celebrated by all industrial houses, artists, craftsman and weavers. The festival is observed on the Kanya Sankranti Day which follows the Ganesh Puja.

Legends of Vishwakarma Puja

According to mythology it is Vishwakarma who designed the triloka; the tripartite universe consisting of the mortal world, the heavens, and the netherworld. Vishwakarma is also credited for creating the missiles used in the mythological era, including the Vajra the sacred weapon of Lord Indra (a parallel of Zeus' thunderbolts) from the ribs of sage Dadhichi.

He is regarded as the supreme worker, the very essence of excellence and quality in craftsmanship.

Hindu mythology describes many of Vishwakarma's architectural accomplishments.

Through the four yugas (aeons of Hindu mythology), he had built several towns and palaces for the gods. In chronological order, these were Swarglok (Heaven) in Satya Yuga, Lanka (the island of Ceylon) in Treta Yuga, Dwarka (Krishna's capital) in the Dwapar Yuga and Hastinapur and Indraprastha in the Kali Yuga.

3 Panchal struggle

Though the Panchal had great importance in olden times some Brahmins refused to accept Panchal as Brahmins which lead to have bread hereditary feud between two groups of caste i.e. Panchal & other Brahmins. During Peshwa rule they suffered a lot. Since Peshwa were Brahmins. Peshwa even did not allowed Panchal to tide the dhoti or waist cloth up between legs and in at the waist a mark of Brahminic rank. The Peshwas belonged to the Chitpavan Brahmin caste and are later migrants to India from the Middle East and Central Asia. They were at odds with Vishwakarma Brahmins who identified themselves as the original Brahmins and builder of the Aryan Vedic civilization.

  • Nelson Hindu Law “Page 139-140 says - “The refusal of many castes in ancient times to accept the Brahmans as their pastors and master would seem to have bread hereditary feud between two group of caste known as right hand and left hand. the origin and history of the feud at present are wholly unknown" but it seem to me to be not improbable that the feud sprang from rivalries & contention between the supporters & adherents of Brahmans on one hand & those of the Goldsmith & other artificers on the other hand. In south of India the Goldsmith’s appear as body strenuously to have resisted the aggressive supremacy of Brahmans & for ages to have claimed for themselves the right to be priest & spiritual guides styling themselves Acharyas (religious teacher) &wearing a sacred.”
  • Meharban once British collector in his book ‘Bombay Gazetteer’ says “Solapur Vol XX page 125:-Panchals are composed of five classes" goldsmith, Blacksmith, carpenter and masons. They consider themselves equals if not superior to local Brahmans. Their family priest who are member of their own community are held in high respect. They grid their boys with sacred thread when they are between seven & nine. A feast called the Brahmans feast or Brahma Bhojan is held when Kin folic and caste follows are asked to dine.

2 Origin

According to traditional belief, Vishwabrahmins are descended from five sons of lord Vishwakarma. They are Manu (blacksmith), Maya (carpenter), Thwastha (metal craftsman), Silpi (stone-carver) Vishvajnya (goldsmith). The community is spread widely throughout India and played a vital role in the village economy. Their socio-economic status varied from a very high level to the low level in different parts of India as they earned high wages in towns because of their factory employment and low in villages[1]. About Vishwabrahmins Anand K. Coomaraswamy says ‘the Kammalar (i.e. Panchal) were known as Vishwa or Dev Brahman or Dev Kammalar. They spread gradually towards the south and then reached Ceylon, Burma & Java. The Kammalar claim to have been the spiritual guides and priests and their position in the society survives in the saying The Kammalar is guru to the world. They still have their own priests & do not relay on Brahman. They also perform priestly rites in connection with consecration of images[2]. They both claim and possess various special privileges, which they always upheld with much vigour, in some cases they claim a rank equal to that of Brahmans.” He also mentions “throughout the rest of ceremony all priest officers had been performed by the craftsman themselves acting as Brahman priest” [2].

Dr. Krishna Rao says “The most highly organized & efficient of the industrial classes was Virpanchal comprising of Goldsmith, coiner blacksmith, carpenter and mason. In finest period of Indian art particularly between eighth and ninth century, they claimed and enjoyed a social status in the community, equal to Brahmans. The art of engraving & sculpture had attained a high stage of development. It was exclusively cultivated by Panchals who wore sacred thread & considered themselves as Vishwakarma Brahmans. The craftsman being deeply versed in national epic literature always figured in the history of India as missionaries of civilization, culture & religion. The intellectual influence being creative & not merely assimilative was at least as great as that of the priest and the author” [3].

Panchal are called as Missionaries of civilization, culture & religion because they spread Hindu Religion to the whole world through their art. Ernest B. Havell says “The northern quarter of (Patliputra) was assigned to Brahmans & certain of the higher craftsman such as armor, ironsmiths & workers in precious stones. The association of skilled craftsmen with Brahmans & Kshatriya is additional evidence that craftsmanship did not hold inferior status in Indo Aryan society[4]. The Stapathy or master builder is described in the Shilpa Shastra as officiating at religious ceremonies which preceded the laying out of the Indo Aryan town or village and some of the metal worker& carpenter of the south of India still retains as their caste indication the name Acharya which denotes a teacher of religion”. In ancient India Vishwabrahmins had great importance. Only Vishwabrahmins could hold the degree Jagatgur i.e. Guru to whole world which can be seen in the saying ‘Kammalar is guru to the world’.

Lohars established the Lohara dynasty. Further information regarding this dynasty can be found at the following web site: http://www.kashmir-information.com/ConvertedKashmir/Chapter7.html

Vishwakarma Manu Maya Brahmins, popularly known as Chari (‘च्यारी’) is a community of artisans in the Indian state of Goa. They are the traditional Hindu carpenter in Goa.The Chari is corrupt form of the word Acharya (Sanskrit: आचार्य) which means the teacher of religion. Surname Acharya is still present in Chari in some part of south India. Those Chari who has left Goa long ago has a surname as Charya (Sanskrit: चार्य)[citation needed]. So in short Chari derived from Acharya -Charya- Chari. Since Portuguese have ruled Goa for 450 years, the surname Chari is only present in Goa. They are also referred as ‘Sutar’ which has derived from Sanskrit word ‘Sutradhar’ which means the designer in Ancient India. Sometimes they are referred as ‘mest’ or ‘thavoi’[a] which means carpenter & stapathi respectively. Those who were good artist were called as ‘Fishal’. For some Chari Portuguese gave surname as Zo which means artist.

They were also called as ‘Shivabrahman’. ‘Saiyadri Khanda’ of ‘Scanda Puran’ says that artist of ancient Goa is called as ‘Shaivagayatri Brahmans’. Those Chari who fled Goa during Portuguese time to prevent them being converted to Christianity & settled in Solapur district are still known as ‘Shiva Brahma Sutar’ . In ancient India Panchal were called as ‘Missionary of civilization, culture and religion’ since Panchal spread Vedic religion in other part of world.
